We've all heard the term pay it forward or give back, but how often do we apply those philosophies to our own lives? I for one believe it's not only my civic duty, but it's part of my identity that makes me want to help others. Mostly because I was a troubled youth that lacked guidance, and it hampered me early on from having the necessary skill set to make it in a modern society. Yes, even simple logical informed decision making, prioritization and time management, self-discipline, or the ability to search the internet. :)
Eventually that all changed because someone made it a point to show a genuine interest in who I was, regardless of my history. Someone that cared enough to put me first and took time to teach and guide me, as well as discipline me. And it didn't stop there. Throughout my young adult life I was blessed to have others mentor me, professionally, personally, and spiritually. This has impacted my life in such a way that I just want to help as many people as possible.
Over the last few years I've been blessed with the opportunity to work with teenagers through many different avenues. One of my favorite things to do is to share my experience with underprivileged teenagers. Just recently, I was asked to speak at a local alternative school. The feedback was well received by the students because they found someone they could relate their stories to and they could see hope in their lives again. I had several students come up afterwards to share how much of an impact my story had on their lives. Another area I’m blessed to work with teenagers is at my Church. Working in this ministry not only helps them, but it helps me.
Giving back keeps me focused, helps me to mature, and makes me truly grateful for where I am at today. Giving is such an integral part of my identity that it also spills over into my work life. I enjoy helping others and empowering them to do things they could not do before. Being the Product Manager (aka Product Ninja) at CTSI-Global is so much more than just managing user stories, product releases, etc. It puts me in a position to be a brand evangelist for CTSI-Global!
Nothing makes me feel better than working with internal and external customers to come up with solutions that meet their immediate needs and long term goals. Working for a company like CTSI-Global has empowered me to meet these lofty goals as well as many others. But I’m not the only one that thinks or works this way. Some of the greatest attributes about our company is the collective years of experience, camaraderie, and selflessness that put together a truly collaborative working environment. It's self-organizing and we all work to help each other, help others. Being around others that lead by example is far more powerful than those that dictate direction and the team at CTSI-Global embraces this viewpoint.
As I mentioned earlier, giving back is more than just a saying, it's a way of life for me. During this holiday season, think about how you can give back to the community, at home, and even at work. Investing in the wellbeing of others reaps more benefits than any 401k will ever payout in the end. Be grateful, be humble, and helpful.
